COVID-19 Update

At Metro Waste, the health and safety of our employees, customers and communities is our highest priority.

Metro is taking precautionary steps in response to the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other relevant federal, state and local agencies and experts to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

We appreciate your patience as we prepare our employees to continue providing the services our customers need and expect.  As we learn how to function in this COVID-19 era, here are six things that we can collectively do as a society to help our garbage collectors and other sanitations workers stay safe while they continue to provide their essential services:

  • Use soap and water or an alcohol-based cleaning product to wash-off the handles and lids of all trash and recycling bins that are physically picked-up by sanitation workers;
  • Ensure that bins and bags are closed and sealed properly;
  • Rinse off and wipe down bottles, cans, and other recyclables that you put into bins;
  • Only place proper waste and recycling materials in the proper bins;
  • Practice social distancing by placing your bins out the night before the waste or recycling is slated to be picked up; and
  • Donate new pairs of work gloves and/or bottles of hand sanitizer by leaving them on top of the trash lid as a gift (include a note so they know they’re safe to use).

Any service changes in the local communities will be communicated via the active alerts below.  We appreciate your support and understanding as we know everyone is working hard to prevent exposure during this pandemic.

Based on the available information, we are currently maintaining our standard collection service.

March 19, 2020:

We are doing our best to take care of our customers and minimize any service disruptions. The recent surge in residential waste volume and the unique challenges we face creates the need for potential changes to our services in some communities, including:

  • Only collecting trash and recycling that is contained in your cart. For customers who have yet to recieve their carts, we will accept waste placed in bags only, not exceeding 50 pounds.
  • Suspending yard and/or bulk waste pickups to prioritize residential collection.

All trash must be bagged and placed in a Metro Waste cart.  You may use regular household trash bags or you can put your trash in grocery bags, such as HEB bags.  Just ensure all trash is in bags and not loose.  All your trash must be inside the trash cart.  Metro will not service any trash outside of the containers as we are trying to limit exposure to our drivers and helpers during this time.

For once-weekly trash customers, you may still have a 30-gallon personal container with bagged trash.

At this time, the recycle is not required to be bagged.

March 16, 2020:

Payments will no longer be accepted at our main office location.  Please mail payments or make payments online.  If you haven’t enrolled in online access, it only takes a few minutes.  You can also call our office to pay or obtain help with enrollment.
